A Account of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground

During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book a place to stay after getting there, yet upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I hopped on public transport and started wandering near the casino, reasoning I could pass those hours somewhere that stayed open all night. This was not ideal at my peak for nailing the admissions interview the next day, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more people like that woman.

I must have looked lost as a young woman saw me loitering in the city and inquired if everything was alright. I explained the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she said I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe for the evening.

Looking back, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. In those days I operated under a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking about things like that. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her generosity abundantly. The world needs more folks with such compassion.
