While perhaps not at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miamiâs iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
âThis pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,â Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
âUnless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,â she went on. âI hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.â
The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling âsix sevenâ â originating from a rap song lyric â often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named âsix-sevenâ its annual vocabulary selection.
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge âaway from grills and cookwareâ, according to the organizers' announcement.
âThe pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,â said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
âIt captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.â
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted Six Sevenâs big moment.
