A Russian James Bond? The New Film's Depiction of Vladimir Putin Seems to Echo Kremlin-Crafted Narratives

In a recent appearance, star Jude Law remarked he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized version circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a endorsement rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and its entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of the president. This figure is a political superhero devoid of flaws, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands more than he reveals.

“Domestically, the constructed Putin has long eclipsed the real one.”

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series launched last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. While he is called Mikhail, the implication is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in buttressing this identical story instead of debunking it. A new film based on a popular book aims to subvert the Putin cult by framing him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by influential figures to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, these events took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged Putin to take the job. The position was in essence a selection process with many candidates. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the country in practice.

  • The shortlist included various figures, including an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
  • Per an expert who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.
  • A businessman familiar with the process said the key criterion was manageability and loyalty, not strength.
“They didn’t need a powerful leader, they needed someone controllable, someone who would follow instructions.”

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his clandestine activities in Dresden fall apart under examination. In essence, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not involved with actual agent work.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by the actor's debut as 007. The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of public dissent, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, despite covering recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
