Addressing the Checkout Assistant That Made Me Absolutely Wordless – I Salute You

This occurred on a Sunday morning, and I was sufficiently irritable, refueling my mum’s car. The location was one of those petrol stations that operates as a grocery store, meaning there's a chance of ending up in line shoppers with carts of somewhat expensive items. This is a dreadful thing to occur when all you want is to pay for some fuel. Awful.

I was fourth in the waiting line. Just one cashier operating, a youthful clerk. There was something unusual in her demeanor. Once the slowpoke at the front of the queue had completed payment for a cleaning product, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, I was certain overhearing the cashier bid him to have a great day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or maybe she did say it and meant it ironically. I pondered if perhaps she was a supporter in my fight against faff, echoing my disdain for people who hold up simple fuel-buyers such as myself.

Taking a step forward, now third in line. The next shopper of our line discharged her fuel-only transaction with impressive quickness. Again, the phrase came: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” To be precise, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. Someone from the US? In Stourbridge? She had the accent, and hardly anyone here tells people a wonderful day, or merely a pleasant day. Highly unusual. Rarely does one encounter people from America knocking around Stourbridge, certainly not working in petrol stations or anywhere else.

Second in line at last. Behind a poor older woman engaged in a right old battle with her carryall, her purchases, her purse and her rewards card. It went on for ever. After she finished, the woman also got told to have a fantastic day. Clearly an American. I might have verified it by saying something hilarious to her, to see if she did that reaction when they look at you, stoically, and say with absolute sincerity: “That’s really funny.” But I couldn’t think of a jest to express.

Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or an impersonation of it, that equates to the same thing – with which she looked directly into my eyes, deep into my soul, and wished me a wonderful day. It improved my mood. Beneficial indeed.
