Body versus Ranking - Boulter's Melbourne Grand Slam Dilemma

Britain's Katie Boulter says she feels she has to "decide between my body and my world standing" as the scramble carries on for a position in next January's Australian Open main event.

While the typical WTA Tour season is finished, there are still position points to be won in South American nations, Argentina, Ecuador and France.

The female entry list for the initial Grand Slam of the forthcoming season will be based on the international positions of the December cutoff, which could present a challenging situation for competitors near the selection threshold.

Health Challenges

Previous British number one Boulter experienced an abductor in her concluding competition of the year in Hong Kong last month, and is now evaluating whether to participate in the WTA 125 Challenger event in Angers, France, in the initial week of December.

Boulter's current physical issue, and the situation she would need to win at least multiple victories in the French tournament to boost her position, means she may well ultimately not participating.

Contrasting Methods

In contrast, male athletes are not facing the identical predicament, as for the initial instance the men's Australian Open competitor lineup will be drawn up from current week's rankings, which is the ATP's standard year-end ranking date.

The change is designed to discouraging athletes from pursuing standing points during what is essentially the rest interval.

Coaching Changes

This period has been a demanding one for Boulter.

She secured just 14 professional major tournament games and recently separated with instructor Biljana Veselinovic after a three-year collaboration in which she captured several WTA championships.

"Biljana is an incredible instructor, and an extremely excellent person as well, which creates situations particularly challenging," Boulter said.

The quest for a replacement instructor is currently ongoing, seeking a professional who has top-tier expertise as Boulter maintains the belief she can be a top-20 player.

Future Goals

"Progressing with a replacement instructor, one thing I'm absolutely certain on is that they are going to be someone who has considerable knowledge in how to make it to the peak performance of this game," she explained.

"I've been positioned as advanced as 23 and I know I can climb back there. I don't believe my level has gone anywhere, I believe the reliability needs to develop.

"My objective is not to be positioned fifty, 40, 30, 20 - we've accomplished that. The aim is to be among the top twenty."
