Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
