Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution Following Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Multiple areas of the city registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents 10x the recommended threshold established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above safe standards.

Fireworks Prohibition and Current Changes

Since 2020, officials had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as winter begins.

However earlier this year, the newly elected local administration petitioned the highest court to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, judges approved the proposal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several recording stations throughout the city recorded pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.

The widespread use of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab pointing to worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the celebrations.

Medical and Financial Consequences

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can even lead to cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand premature deaths per year in Delhi.
