Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor remarked when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any determination is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, using his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would expand Democratic representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy revealed intentions to withhold federal funds from California and suggested eliminating the state's ability to provide CDLs.
"I'm about to pull $160m from California," he said, following a recent fatal crash in California involving an undocumented trucker that caused fatalities and casualties.
Newsom's office noted that the U.S. government had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.
Duffy had earlier indicated he was blocking additional funds from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," his administration said in a previous statement responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
A this month's poll found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an typical level of over 40% to under 40%.
Some time ago, the governor remarked while visiting several swing states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the American people."
