Hardline Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's New President.
Following a conclusive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily built on promises to combat increasing insecurity and significantly restrict immigration.
He consistently cited immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an stern warning for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His proposals included Trump-inspired measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, security fences, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Continental Wave
Several analysts view Kast's win as part of a wider rightward trend in the region, following this year's electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts also describe it as a continuation of the predictable swing of power between left and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Solid Majority
In spite of his sweeping popular vote win, Kast will not hold an clear majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all conservative parties are combined together.
This political reality could complicate his agenda, such as a promise to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a plan for which he has yet to offered specifics.
"There are numerous things about how a Kast presidency will operate that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for implement them," commented a political science analyst.
The professor continued, "In terms of the economy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies associated with the right. But where there is far less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse across the campaign."
