In spite of Overwhelming Success, Expedition 33 Creators Aim to Keep Team Small

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a top Game of the Year candidate, it’s also a huge sales triumph. Developer Sandfall Interactive along with publisher their publishing partner revealed that this title exceeded 5 million units in sales, and that’s even with its status as a launch-day addition on Xbox Game Pass.

This achievement was a surprise to the developers. I firmly believed that we would have an enjoyable experience that would meet moderate market performance,” a senior team member explained.

A technical director remarked this title's critical score, now standing at 93, came as “maybe the biggest shock to the studio relative to “our initial expectations and what the reality of the field was. Because when it dropped everybody in the studio was screaming and jumping. It was really frantic.”

The positive reception resulted in work on a complimentary expansion for the game featuring fresh areas, foes, along with challenging bosses, as announced is coming within the “upcoming month[s]”.

Nevertheless, while the game is growing, don’t expect the team will expand. “We have an excellent group under clear creative leadership with a clear direction for our work and also for new ideas. We'd like to keep the human scale that worked for this game and perhaps create large projects one by one,” they added.

The studio's scale generated significant conversation upon the title's release. Certain industry figures, such as the famed director, considered the development group as the model for creative teams. Although the team is and was indeed a small team next to major studios, one glance at the game's credits reveals many individuals participated; Sandfall hired a team in Korea to work on gameplay animations, as an instance.

“We plan to recruit slightly more for sure if we have a future production surge in the coming years,” the executive commented. “But I would see essentially a craft studio of a few highly skilled individuals capable of producing artistic collaborations.” It was stated that Sandfall’s vision as a studio “focuses on preserving the successful elements that led to this accomplishment in the first place.”

Although it's premature for the studio to disclose concrete plans about future projects — rest assured, I attempted to learn more — the developers understand what’s at its core. “Turn-based gameplay, forms the foundation of what we built,” a developer remarked. “It's a bit too early to announce our next interests, however, it's crucial to stay true to our studio's essence featuring rich storytelling and the interesting gameplay that drives our passion.”

They added that the project originated from their director pursuing his ideal project. And hopefully that philosophy will be repeated with upcoming games.”
