Japan's Economic Output Contracts as Overseas Sales Face Impact by American Trade Duties

Japan's economy has recorded a drop for the first time in a year and a half, primarily driven by declining overseas shipments due to recent US trade duties.

G7 Growth Rankings

The Japanese economy stands as the first Group of Seven country to disclose an GDP decline in the latest three-month period.

With the United States still needing to release its gross domestic product figures for Q3 2025, the current G7 economic rankings show:

  • The French economy: +0.5% quarterly growth
  • UK: 0.1 percent
  • Canadian economy: +0.1% (preliminary figure)
  • Germany: zero growth
  • Italian economy: 0%
  • Japan: -0.4%

Travel Stocks Decline during Diplomatic Rift with Beijing

In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is dealing with an intensifying political dispute with China regarding Taiwan.

Shares in Japan's travel and retail companies have dropped noticeably after China advised its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.

This decision by Beijing heightened a diplomatic feud that was initiated by remarks from Tokyo's recently appointed PM about the potential of deploying forces in the event of a potential Chinese invasion on Taiwan.

The development led to a surge of sell-offs across Japanese leisure shares.

  • Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7 percent
  • The department store chain plummeted by 11.3 percent
  • Japan Airlines fell by 3.75 percent

"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and China's travel warning advising against travel to Japan introduces short-term headwinds for consumer-facing sectors.

"Chinese visitors account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and hospitality especially vulnerable."

GDP Decline Breakdown

Japanese gross domestic product declined by 0.4% in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' overseas shipments were impacted by tariffs imposed by the US recently.

Exports were a key driver of the decline, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the previous quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.

Earlier this year, the American government had threatened Japan with a new 25% tariff on its goods, which was later reduced to 15% when the two nations concluded a trade agreement.

Consumer spending also declined, by 0.3 percent quarter-on-quarter.

On an annualized basis, Japan's GDP contracted by 1.8% in the quarter through September.

"The Japanese economic situation was solid in the first half of this year and today's GDP data showed that growth is halted temporarily.

I expect Japan's economy to be returning on a moderate growth trend going forward."

The US administration has lately recognized the impact of tariffs on US consumers, lowering tariffs on imported food products including meat, produce, beverages and fruits amid growing concerns about rising costs.
