Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
