For much of the game, the home side's attack was surprisingly ineffective, failing to create a solitary shot on target. Their hopes of returning to continental football continue to be undermined by such erratic form. This appeared to have sealed a crucial three points for Nuno's side in their battle against relegation. Brighton, awoken by the setback, pushed forward, going close when Maximilian Kilman almost deflected the ball into his own goal.

As late goals are commonplace at the Amex Stadium, the home supporters kept a sliver of hope. Their faith was rewarded in the dying moments. Amid a hectic goalmouth melee, van Hecke displayed composure to slide the ball into the six-yard box, where Rutter was on hand to crash it home. The equaliser sparked wild celebrations among the Brighton players and fans, while it was a crushing blow to West Ham's survival bid.
The draw does little to ease the relegation fears surrounding West Ham, who stay deeply entrenched in the fight at the bottom of the table. For Albion, it is another instance of their resilient attitude, but also highlights the erratic performances that are preventing their season.
