The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.
The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.
Series seven will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
