Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
