New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was ā€œin good spiritsā€ during their latest talk.

ā€œWhat reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,ā€ Glenn stated on Wednesday. ā€œHis family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.ā€

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

ā€œNot certain at the moment,ā€ Glenn remarked. ā€œYet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.ā€

NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts ā€œa great dealā€ since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.

ā€œWhat immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,ā€ Glenn remarked. ā€œAnd I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
ā€œA certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.ā€

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

ā€œHe has stayed engaged with the team,ā€ Glenn commented. ā€œI mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.ā€

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
