Figures from both sides of the political aisle and the Hollywood industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
This is a vile and vile statement,ā remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didnāt support him. Deeply disturbing."
Some GOP lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, thereās a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of a different individual.
Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
