Joe Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Parker is eager to compete regardless.

“Fabio is also in an excellent situation and he merely needed to be patient for his opportunity. He said ‘No.’ He desired to compete – and with Parker because it gives him a chance to skip the line.”

Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not thinking about losing. I respect my opponent and his achievements and how he has prepared for this contest. But I am on a superior tier and I am intending to prove it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my boxing journey and the greatest challenge I've faced. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I rise to the occasion. This Saturday will be no different. The gap between Parker's status and where people think I am has been a frequent topic throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his resume. In no way is he an senior boxer but he has been in the game for a while and had several tough bouts. I too have faced intense battles and I realize they cause wear and tear. He has been in a significantly more of those fights than I have.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker is likely to be too experienced, and too technically proficient, for his opponent. He is expected to triumph a hard-fought contest with the conviction that he is the leading contender for Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a clear gap.
