Pope Strengthens Claim to England Cricket's Number Three Slot with Bold 90 Versus Lions

It is tough to know how significant of the English team's preparatory game will prove relevant when their Ashes contest kicks off 10km away at Perth Stadium on the coming Friday – a short span in space or time but ages away in significance and environment – but if it managed solely strengthening Ollie Pope's self-belief, that alone has rendered the endeavor beneficial.

The English side's number three batsman – that point is certainly totally clear – built on his initial innings century by notching an additional 90 in the follow-up innings, and the truly notable was less about the total of runs but the manner in which they were scored. Periodically the 27-year-old appeared dominant, hitting a dozen boundaries and a couple of maximums, hitting the ball beautifully but with fierce purpose.

This was only a practice match versus a England Lions side that used exactly 11 pitchers across a game played in front of a few dozen of onlookers in a open field, but it was nevertheless very praiseworthy. For the record, the England team, chasing of 202 once the Lions declared their second innings on 251 for six, succeeded by five wickets in hand once Smith raced the team over the conclusion with a flurry of fours and sixes.

Joe Root added a further 31 points but was less than convincing during England's practice.

Zak Crawley and Duckett, the other two major first-innings' performers, both were dismissed in the follow-up, while Joe Root scored several more points – 31 on this time – but was far from more dominant, before being puzzled and duly bowled by Will Jacks. Brook experienced an identical outcome shortly after.

Bashir – who ended the fixture having bowled 12 overs for each side – will have encountered a portion of the hitting he faced rather challenging. His initial six overs against the Lions went for 56, with Ben McKinney tucking in to deliveries that if not exactly loose was surely far from dangerous.

By the conclusion the sixth over of those deliveries, the English side's remaining three pitchers had conceded almost precisely the same amount of points – 57 – from 15, though the bowler turned a somewhat less generous in time, conceding 27 from his remaining six. He secured one wicket, taking a smart, low-down grab, falling to his right, to end Bethell's innings for 70, facing 80 deliveries.

Bethell, making up for managing just three runs in the initial innings, was a member of three half-centurions in the Lions team's top four. McKinney's scores from opening batsman were more reliable than those of their No 3: he made 66 in their initial knock and went two better in their second, using 61 deliveries over his 50 runs, with five fours and two six-hit shots, the pair from Bashir's deliveries. Bethell got to 68 prior to a mis-hit to Stokes at cover, who took a stooping catch at low down.

Cox showed comparable steadiness, and followed his initial innings' 53 with an additional 57, at just over a scoring rate of one. He produced a few remarkably beautiful hits en route, including a drive down the ground and a pull shot against successive Brydon Carse deliveries to achieve his fifty.

After missing the first day of this fixture with a stomach issue and provided merely the most minor of contributions to the second day, Carse bowled brilliantly when at last provided the opportunity, with Ben McKinney and Jordan Cox included in his three wickets.
