The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the children frightened. After Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. But the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators offering help, and the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who declares initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the people's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel
