Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
