Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
