The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
