Israelis have assembled throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions said that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the morning session ended without significant progress, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to close the disparities between the both parties.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies provision
  • Post-war administration of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until all the hostages return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home again, we can breathe again. Then we can start to heal," she continued.

Near the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do any agreement needed for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the conflict to finish in return for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the music event, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.

From there, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk comes, the fear comes with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Health Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis indicated two more dead people had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli forces while attempting to get help to the south, health workers stated.

The territory's health ministry announced a significant number of the {territ
