The Three Lions to Start UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an Three Lions fixture since eight years ago, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to host the England side for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.

The English side are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, if they top the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Launch and Demonstration

The event was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were barracked as they arrived the venue by about 50 activists, who demanded the Israeli team to be removed from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Signs were held up with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Fixture List

The first match of the tournament will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a game that will include the Welsh team if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at late afternoon.

It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for European club finals from the following campaign, will appeal to family audiences and help reach a broader range of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Irish team are due to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.

Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the standard process.

Locations and Playoffs

Villa Park and The North London arena complete the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals staged at every host’s main arena.

The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a tournament for the supporters and a showcase of everything we cherish about the game – its fervor and capacity to foster unity.”

More than three million passes, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be released to fans.
