A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for two lost boats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Naval Search Efforts Initiated

The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying a minimum of 9 sailors, as stated by a military release.

The ships had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Relief to Cuba

The island nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with suitable safety systems and communication devices," an official involved in the effort stated.

The nine-person crew are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Previous Relief Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That boat, dubbed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bicycles and provisions.

Wider Geopolitical Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k operations called off in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Diplomatic pressure have increased in recent months, with remarks from different officials highlighting the complicated state of diplomatic ties.

Responding to certain proposals, a prominent official from Cuba stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The Mexican navy stated it was pledged to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the boats and ensure the safety of the crews.

At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
