Wildfires Ravage Western Australia as Thermal Readings Skyrocket

Extreme heat and intense bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

Widespread Extreme Heat Alerts Across the Region

These conditions follow this month's fires in New South Wales, which resulted in the destruction of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been activated for later this week in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering blazing sunshine to much of the region.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless heat creates a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

Global Climatic Events Trigger Chaos

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into darkness last week after powerful winds damaged the urban electrical network, with falling trees knocking out electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to major transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Substantial damage to electrical infrastructure is expected to cause ongoing issues as utility companies scramble to restore power to over 1 million residents.

Unusual Fog Blankets Typically Clear Area

At the same time, a valley famed for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on recorded history. A particular form of low cloud, which usually lasts for only a few days, has been unusually extensive and long-lasting this year, keeping temperatures at a key transport hub under 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been driven by unprecedented fall precipitation that left soils saturated.

  • Primary Driver: Exceptional fall rains soaked the ground.
  • Result: Prolonged and thick mist development.
  • Effect: Temperatures stayed unseasonably low for an extended time.

Storm Brings Wintry Weather to Holiday Islands

Turning to another country, a powerful storm has ushered in heavy rainfall, powerful winds and even snow to a group of islands – weather many would not connect with this popular holiday destination. While snow is not unknown at elevated areas, the system brought some of the deepest accumulations in 2016 to a national park, compelling its temporary shutdown.

Alongside the snow, strong northerly winds buffeted the archipelago, with wind gusts reaching 50mph observed on several locations. The influence of the storm is expected to diminish this week with more typical weather taking hold.
