Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
